There are a lot of different approaches to psychology. Probably not one is right, but all have an aspect of the truth. The books of Sigmund Freud have been well read. The core of the theory was developed 100 years ago by him. The core concept was based on the idea of the base nature which is the ID and then the EGO. Your reptile mind, that is about the three “fs” is what is called the ID. How you get along with reality is the work of the ego. But the social world is different from the material world, which is why you need a superego. The ideas of Freud really made a huge a difference in people’s lives. In the end though, it was a practical concept of the way the brain works that really made a difference. Carl Rogers invented client centered theory. In this concept the conflicts from the superego is the root of society’s problems. It can be tough dealing with other people. And this is the cause of many issues. Social needs must follow the social system. This can be complex, and the superego is tasked with undestanding the ever changing rules. However those rules can be damaging to a person. You can’t be your original self if you’re posing as what people want you to be. Its this issue that is at the root of many people’s modern dilemas. These conditions of worth can alter your life for the worse. Once in a while they do no harm. Going along with tradition, CR then found a new way of looking at the mind. He creates an environment that isn’t so corrosive to the person. This helps set everything in order again. PCP was developed years ago. Everything in modern times now is about perscriptions. There is little work with any model of the mind. Most effort is put into finding the right balance of drugs. Many children today are put on pills rather then going through any kind of psychotherapy. Is there anyway to know what method is right. I don’t see a return to a mind-model based treatment. Writing a prescription is too easy.
